I had the issue once today. It happens randomly, not always when an app
is maximized. Difficult to reproduce (happens like one time in a
hundred). I'll mark this confirmed, seems more like a gnome-screensaver

The idea started with the folder in tree view, actually admitting I don't get
it, or is it untrivial to just allow a complete context menu independent from
where you click and leave it up to the user which action

I've got the same annoying problem using unity 11.10,and I've just got a work
around : I've replaced zenity by yad (requires yad package installation of
course and to add it to the dconf-editor desktop>unity>panel whitelist)

An example video when there is no existing file in a folder.
If an empty folder is selected it saves the file and doesn't rename, well,
nothing to rename.
If there already exist lots of other files the dialog arbitrary selects a given
file.
As side effect it shows it also highlights always an arb
The problem is not what shotwell does. The problem is what the first time
user expects shotwell to do.
Remember that people are coming to shotwell from f-spot, the photo manager
that actually did (or appeared to) mangle users' photos, with a low level
of confidence in linux photo managers.
