When the appointment dialog does not accept any more input go to the evolution
main window, right click the calendar and choose 'new appointment' again. Then
a second appointment dialog is opened and now you can interact with both

I have just managed to stop VirtualBox while gnome-screensaver was
activ. Instead of stopping VirtualBox I also would have been able to
