I think the problem here is that gnome-shell detects the lid is closed
already and treats that like you just closed the lid immediately on
login.
I have heard about this kind of problem before and am not sure if it's

If you know how to log in remotely via SSH then please:
0. Install package 'openssh-server'.
1. Reboot.
2. Log in via ssh from another machine.
3. Write down the PID of the gnome-shell process (that's the login
screen GUI).
4. Leave the machine so it times out and the screen blanks. Make sure
I wonder if this freeze is related to FS syncing... Are you able to
reproduce any freeze WITHOUT using USB drives?
