I used to play mp3 files from my server via an sftp connection.
After going to sleep with my laptop the ssh connection is disconnected,
nautilus has its own problems with it. But while nautilius can recover rhytm
does not and just crashes.

I see other slightly similar things happening (in Lucid as well):

Well ok, now I could test the behavior of rythmbox in Lucid.

Well, I haven't tested this recently. Besides, I'm still using 8.10
(Intrepid), so I haven't tested it in recent releases either.
But I really do object on the policy of removing bugs because the author

It turns out that un-installing the proprietary nVidia video driver
fixes this (though it eliminates 3D acceleration).

FWIW I'm getting the same flicker as well, also with an nVidia card, on
the Lucid beta; it does not happen in other movie players (VLC,
MPlayer).
