Issue resolved, probable cause was update to libs that application was
using without a restart of the application being forced by the package
management system
Fix required in package update process (apt-get)?

Even stranger, hitting Ctrl-T to open the hung dir in a new tab will
cause both views to load OK.

Problem is NOT the number of files, it will come back if a particular file's
thumbnail is imaged.
Corrupt thumbnail file or failure in thumbnail generation suspected.
