Finally got it! Here's the xsession-errors for the day. Things appear to
get interesting towards the end:
"The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.

I haven't experienced the problem very recently but the next time I do,
I'll make sure to get the relevant bits.
As it stands, my .xsession-errors is over 30MB in size, apparently
mainly due to some programs I've run in Wine.
