I found out that the deskbar-applet isn't the responsible for freezing the
gnome-panel, it's Pidgin.
I purged the deskbar-applet via synaptic, now I'm going to nuke pidgin. Sorry
for the waste of time here.

I don't think it found anything, but, as I type, gnome-panel froze again. And
it only happens when the deskbar-applet is running. Don't know what else could
be conflicting with it.
What I saw was that, when gnome-panel first froze (while running gdb), it froze
while deskbar-applet had an open th
I get the same error, via:
1- gnome-panel freezes
2- kill gnome-panel with -9
3- gnome-panel restarts, and deskbar-applet crashes.
Sometimes the deskbar-applet crashes "on its own", asking the same question, if
it should be reloaded. I removed it from the panel, and it stopped crashing.

i'm having the same problem. i just need to start my pc, log in, and then close
the session. the screen will go blank, and ctrl-alt-del or anything like that
won't work. I have to restart the pc to be able to log in again.
But I'm using a Radeon XPress 1100 with the proprietary driver.
