Sorry for lack of resp - was without www for a few weeks.
Problem is still there with the latest updates of Gutsy (completely up to date
and synch) despite upgrading most of the packages involved.
Another issue crops up if I do a ctrl-alt backspace X restart - when I logon
again (without rebooti

For about 2-4 minutes after I logon both the top menu (applications etc)
and the bottom one (virtual desktop) are not accessible to me - if I
click on them nothing happens. However, all the clicking around seems to
be remembered and is then acted
