I am also able to reproduce this bug. I logged in via ssh and collected
journal logs and drm_info while the screen was blank and unrecoverable.
MUTTER_DEBUG_ENABLE_ATOMIC_KMS=0 does in fact solve the issue for me.

2. activate Ubuntu Unity Plugin - Switcher - Key to flip through the windows
in the switcher. You will find this option is deactivated. Binding it will not
unbind alt+circumflex right away
3. activate Application Switcher
Alt+Circumflex is used in Japanese IME for Windows to switch input mode.
Had IBUS in 10.04 configured to use the same keys for activating Anthy.
Having to relearn the keys has significant impact on productivity.
So please make the Unity keybinding configurable.

As it turns out, I can add a screenshot after all, as the issue has
resurfaced. I have no idea what is causing this however, because at
other times the background is white and I can read it perfectly fine -
and I've made no settings changes.

Hmm... apparently not. After the latest series of updates the background
for the status menu is a light grey, almost white, with dark text. Must
have been a temporary issue. I'm marking it as invalid since I can't
reproduce the issue as of today.

only certain files, the file I have problems with was created by TeX
