At startup the "drum beat" for login is heard, hence the sound device is
detected and activated. While starting up the desktop no sound is heard.
I checked "sound preferences" by dragging the mouse pointer on the icon
and the correct sound device is shown. But the moment I start sound
preferences a

Once I discovered the problem I rebooted and used the 2.6.24-16 kernel with the
same result.
