I have a similar problem with a Samsung smart phone in Ubuntu Studio
14.04. I don't use Nautilus, but I can copy files in Thunar file manager
from the device connected in MTP mode to local hard drive. However, I
can not open the same (source) files for reading by e.g. VLC. In

least on every other versions of ubuntu I have tried, latest 12.10
So I connected it and it showed files and folders as it used to but when I
try to play something, it did not work, vlc even

You need to add a PPA to your system by the developer (Philip Langdale), his
comments are worth reading:

MTP is a protocol by Microsoft so you would expect it to work under Windows.
Despite appearances your Walkman is not just a typical USB

I have a small problem I do not have this file "10-local.rules"
It is amazing other ubuntu versions used to work just fine with this player but
on 13.04 it stopped working

There is nothing in 10-local.rules other than the one line I gave:
$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules
ATTRS{idVendor}=="054c", ATTRS{idProduct}=="059a", NAME="WALKMAN"

Should I create that folder because all I have in folder is my HP printer files

Thank you for your bug report. That bug seems to list different issue,
some of the comments also suggest the problem are solved with the new
gvfs ... is that still an issue with 13.10?

There were two problems I think, the MTP device (Sony Walkman) is no
longer handled by gvfs-gphoto2 probably due to a change in the udev
rules or perhaps how the default case is handled when the device isn't
recognized, and a bug that has been fixed in the PPA mentioned above
