I have tried the method that you stated; It was not .gconf that was
causing the problem, it would seem. I removed .gconf and booted to find
the same problem. I then removed .gnome2 from the home directory to user
the standard config for those files; the issue was rectified.

You could try moving .gconf somewhere else and notice if that's still an
issue, if it works correctly then some user configuration is gconf is
creating the issue, not issue to determine what but you can start moving
subdirectories there until finding which one is the issue

this problem, could you advise any that I could change for this?

I haven't managed to identify the exact configuration that is causing
this; I have created a new user and migrated all my personal settings to
it, excluding the ".*" files in my ~/ directory.

replicated.

This issue is relatively new; It did not occur when I first installed
Gutsy on both the laptop and the desktop, using Nvidia and ATI cards
respectively, so I'm fairly certain it's not a graphics problem per-se.
The bug occurs from boot, no other steps are necessary to get the
problem.
