Same here, suspend works, but hibernate doesn't.

issue.

When logged in hibernate works, starts up with a prompt w/ the ability
to switch users.
Suspend from gdm appears to do very little, monitor shuts off, HD light
flashes.
Hibernate gives an authentication failure.

As suggested, we can remove hibernate from gdm, but suspend seems to
function.
I'm also using gdm 2.14.10-0ubuntu1, suspend works fine from gdm, but
hibernate gives me the "authentication failed" error.

Confirmed (sort of). Looks like gdm 2.14.10 fixed my suspend problem (see
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/50703)
I don't normally hibernate, but when I tried it (from the login options menu) I
get the "authentication failed" message as mentioned above.

FYI, I can confirm GDM 2.14.10 did NOT fix my suspend problems. See bug

I also can confirm that suspend is working with gdm 2.14.10.
But hibernate is still failing with "authentication failed".

Thank you for the comment, marking as fixed then, the changelog points it:

command works."

dapper-updates
and I can confirm the suspend functionality is now working for me from the gdm
login screen.

The hibernation part of the bug is still an issue with edgy, tested on a
whitebox laptop. I'm not sure if the suspend issue I see is this or
another problem. Thanks.

David:
I think your bug is subtely different to the one described here. If you
wish to follow up on it I would suggest filing a seperate bug report. It
is probably worth testing your machine with the fglrx drivers completely
removed (perhaps by blacklisting the driver). This will let your rule
out
Using a Compaq Desktop 64 bit system, Model SR1750NX. This computer has
onboard ATI graphics and 1 gig ram (shared with the video card). The
fglrx driver from the Ubuntu repositories is being used.
This computer will suspend successfully from Windows XP.
When Hibernate is selected from the Logout
Suspend from GDM is fixed for me now (tried 2 times - both perfect).
Hibernate still gives "authentication failed" message, and does nothing.
Both work from the gnome menu and gnome-power.

Im running dapper with full updates, on an IBM Thinkapd R50e.
FROM THE GDM:
Suspend:- Shutsdown into sleep mode correctly and appears to start up
after pressing a key but the display remains blank.
Hybernate:- Requests Confirmation Dialogue box but clicking hibernate
does nothing.
FROM GNOME DE
>From gdm I get the "authentication failed" message as well, but I can
hibernate from my log in.

There are two ways of doing suspend to ram (seemingly). One way
(standby) is fairly common but doesn't save much power. The other way
(ram) is not so common but saves more power. By default dapper defaults
to ram.
See line 8 of /etc/default/acpi-support for further details.

For myself it appears that suspend works but hibernate gives the
"authentication failed" message as Matthew East notes. I agree with Jos
Dehaes that any exposed feature ought to work. I'm not sure I'd call it
a blocker but I do think this is a major bug. The devs are welcome to
disagree with me
SonWon, please file a new bug for your issue, where you include more
information on your hardware.
This bug is not about problems with suspend and hibernation, solely that the
choices in the menu in the GDM greeter do not work.
