I am using the default Karmic install without making any changes. I've
updated the system after the install and have been testing a few things.
According to the Appearance menu, the Visual Effects are set as Normal.

Okay, here is what i've found.
Once I've switched off the Visual Effects, all my terminals have apeared
in the right workspaces. After that, I've reenabled the effects, saved
session and logged back on. The terminals are now in the right places.

gnome-session issue - it is either a gnome-terminal bug or a WM bug.
If you can work out a way to reliably trigger the issue, please run
xprop on each of the gnome-terminal windows before you end your
