Matthew, while I'm not a native English speaker (so I ignore if "switch off" is
better for native people), I see the following objective issues in this change:
* as Milo said, other OS/DE (kde too) are using a different word, you'll have
to close many bugs asking to restore "shut down" :)
* ups
PS of course I forgot to mention that this change will affect
documentation too... :(

Hi Milo. We're using "Switch Off" because we think it's more direct and
straightforward, and that in this case it outweighs consistency with
other OSes. Other parts of Gnome have been fixed in other bug reports
(bug 531495, bug 531493, bug 531491).

is it possible to have an explanation of why "Shut Down" has been renamed to
"Switch Off"?
I reckon Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Mac all use "Shut Down" (Windows XP is
using "Turn off"). Where else has "Switch Off" been used in Gnome? Shouldn't
"Switch Off" be used where there is a real bu
