Your Majesty (sorry I couldn't resist that one) If you switch to metacity (press Alt-F2 type: metacity --replace) does he problem still persist? You can switch back to compiz by using compiz --replace. For me the cursor goes to comix regular in Compiz on the desktop but displays my default cursor
