OK, after much reading and doing and undoing, I still cannot connect to
windows (xp) server shares from Hardy but, I can from Feisty (laptop).
I have tried
1-Add the following line to /etc/samba/smb.conf:

2-installed gnome-vfs package
3- remove and re-install samba
the version upload to intrepid today already fixed the issue so closing

The fix in hardy-proposed doesn't seem to fix my ftp mounts. They still
disappear and I have to re-mount them after logout/login. Is that
supposed to work that way? It's really annoying and seems like a
definite regression from Feisty/Gutsy. I much prefer having my ftp
mounts stay available.

I tried to remove it from application-add/remove. It gave me lots of
parse errors similar to ones I pasted below. After running it for 20
minutes I killed the remove script. Later on when I try to do
distribution upgrade the software

I agree the whinging doesn't fix anything but surely Ubuntu must have
some resources they can use to help upstream get it fixed. Having

Feature request.
Some plain-text emails arrive without hard text wrap at 80 columns.
Evolution correctly word wraps these when viewed, paragraphs wrap at
window edge.
However when replying to such an email, the text is not wrapped in any
way,
