On the latest Ubuntu 11.10, two NVIDIA Propietary drivers are listed
(and one is enabled by default somehow) in Jockey-gtk. it may be falsely
showing the open-source driver as a proprietary one. This is on a GTX
470 from
I have the same problem. I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 and now I can't
log on with my user. It doesn't matter if I choose "Ubuntu", "Ubuntu 2d"
or "XFCE". Screen turns black for a second and returns to log on screen.
Other users still work though.

Nevermind, I had set the exported the variable UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 trying
to disable the menus following something I had found online. It turns
out that was wrong. If you want to disable the global menus you need to

If LightDM fails then a failsafe X server should start allowing the user
to know there is a problem and attempt to recover the system. This
doesn't appear to be working in 11.10..
