The same happend to me when upgrading my Kubuntu 13.04 to the released
13.10, which is running in a kvm x86_64 virtual machine.
After I entering my password, an empty splash screen remains.
all logs in /var/log/lightdm are empty (exept for the *.old ones) as
well as Xorg.0.log.
Please tell me,

I apologize for cross posting, I commented in the wrong (duplicate) bug
and I cannot see a way to delete my comment.
Here's a workaround: After the first alert pops up, before dismissing
it, press Alt+F2 and type xclip -selection clipboard blank
This way you don't have to completely shut down
I should add, that I didn't suspend or resume the computer. It happens
frequently when I compile and package a Linux Distribution, e.g. with
Yocto/OpenEmbedded (using two parallel instances of make -j4 on a dual
core machine with hyperthreading enabled). This does not only cause high
CPU load, but

This seems to be a regression, as I haven't had that issue before.
When dragging an application window to the 2nd monitor, that application
window can no longer be accessed using the mouse. Clicking on it doesn't
do anything. Trying to drag it by clicking and holding the
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

Oversized copypaste
For me, this only ever happens on the first login with a new user
account. If I log into Unity first, leave it alone for a few seconds to
finish initializing, and then log in to gnome-flashback, it works every
time. Happened in Raring, too.
