Sometimes just moving them around or moving the mous over them seem to
help to recover the missing characters, but most of the times I have to
close-reopen in order to get things back

problems. After a reboot my .Xauthority file was owned by root causing
me to be stuck at the login screen with poor screen resolution. I was
able to fix the .Xauthority file:

I got a update error from the package fglrx. After rebooting I lost my
graphical display and got errors from lightdm. I cannot comment more.
