3) I connect the pendrive
4) I open Nautilus
5) The pendrive in nautilus appears as mounted
6) In nautilus I hit a right click

It can not be
Due to bad interactions with gdm (namely gnome shell process under gdm
user consuming a whole logical core), I had to move to lightdm. I will
try with it and report back.

I also have the same issue with nautilus in Ubuntu 16.10.
It affects only the list view, grid view works fine.
Also other file browsers like Thunar work fine in both list and grid view.
Additional notes:
- Pressing Ctrl seems to switch off the editing mode.
