In a fresh install of Oneiric, I had a dual screen setup with 3D capability
adequate for compiz effects.
Then I tried fglrx but had issues with the dual monitor setup and setting
resolutions with amdcccle so I uninstalled fglrx.
However, it seems that there are some after effects of having had

No sign of Coherence in the plugins for totem even though totem-plugins-extra
is installed and the package details (displayed in synaptic) indicate that
coherence is one of the component plugins.

Ok, I have a dual boot on this machine.
Both partitions have Oneiric running with fglrx driver now installed.
I have not installed Ubuntu updates on the second partition and the environment
is working better.
I only just updated the linux kernel to 3.0.0-12, confirmed no change, then

I think this may have been coincidental in the fact that I installed
Thunderbird at the same time as installing some other updates.
