Ok, I was mistaken about this needing ibus 1.4.99 (unless you use ibus
input methods in which case this is still broken). For everyone else,
this is fixed with gnome-control-center 3.6 which has been uploaded to
raring for Ubuntu 13.04.

I'm also confused as to why this is of low priority. I am a bit nervous
to install the PPA... and it indicates that it isn't stable. Have people
had much success cause I'm willing to try that. Could we not just deploy
a solution for this release that will also make it into 13.x

Pretty annoying bug for those we are switching between languages all the
time like me (Spanish/English)... any trick of how to avoid it would be
welcomed.
Right now, the quickest (really slow) way to change it for me is:
Space+enter (I use Synapse)
Type Keyboard Layout
Go to the Layouts tab
Move
After upgrading to 12.10 there is no indicator keyboard layout! In
Lightdm two indicators en and en+ru+ua! In unity nothing! Need use:
setxkbmap "us,ru,ua" ",winkeys,winkeys" "grp:menu_toggle,grp_led:scroll"

without walking on razors edge between upgrading and braking packages;

as overview mode), that includes volume control ;)

Installing the ppa did provide the keyboard layout indicator, but I find
that the options for the key to switch layouts are poor. I used to have
CapsLock as a layout switcher (and Shift CapsLock for CapsLock), but the
current alternatives are only a subset of the previous ones.

I installed the ppa above. It deleted my selected keyboard layouts in
the system settings but after re-adding them I now have the keyboard
menu in gnome-shell. Suggest integrating the ppa into the gnome3 ppa so
gnome-shell works by default. Thanks for the help Jeremy.

I tried the Jeremy's ppa on Beta 2 Ubuntu 12.10 (gnome shell) and it
doesn't seem to work anymore. The daemon throws no error on the terminal
but I cannot see the indicator now can I type in Japanese.
Any ideas?

is auto-generated from the gsettings schemas.

I can confirm that the PPA brings the layout indicator back.
However, it brings a new problem. Now it is much more difficult to set a
keyboard shortcut for changing layouts.
In the Typing section of the keyboard shortcuts I am not able to set the "next
engine" to be a combination of shifts and/

my PPA. It's far too late for this to land in Quantal and here's a few
notes:
1. It needs gnome-control-center (System Settings) and gnome-settings-daemon to
be updated. gnome-settings-daemon is critical infrastructure to th
