This appears to be fixed in gdm version (3.10.0.1-0ubuntu3) trusty but
I'll follow up more during the Trusty Beta testing cycle as I'll need to
test Saucy -> Trusty upgrades at that time.

Just wanted to pipe up and mention a similar problem is occurring with
Lubuntu Trusty, even though it uses LightDM. Note the empty black panels
on the desktop in the att screenshot.

Just playing this AM and I found that switching from gdm to lightdm with
lightdm-gtk-greeter allows me to boot to a usable flashback (no effects)
session so I added the gdm tag.
