Sadly, I must have deleted the tab while using 38.0.5, as when I re-installed
49,
everything worked fine - no excessive processor or RAM usage...
I still need to know the answer to the last sentence in my comment #2,

First, I un-installed this version (49.0.2+build2-0ubuntu0.16.10.2)
and installed the previous 49.0 version
and then the previous 49.0 version
and then versions 48, 47, 46, 45, 44, 43, 42, 41, 40, and 39 (each time
selecting the last available incarnation of
