I have now installed Ubuntu 11.10 and see this bug while running Unity,
so I agree probably not related to KDE.

The bug seems not to be related to KDE. I found it after upgrading to
11.10, when trying to open a Calc file generated by phpMyAdmin (2.8K,
attached).
The file (donwloaded to my home dir, renamed as test.ods) will open fine
from File Open within LibreOffice, but trying to double click it on
Upgrading my natty installation from LibreOffice 3.3.4 to 3.4.3 has
produced a similar problem.

Further information - the following is generally what I always see:
1) Double-click on desktop shortcut, Calc opens with empty spreadsheet
2) Trying to open the file using the shortcut filename, i.e.
/home/username/Desktop/filename.ods from the Recent Documents list will not
open the file
