There is a series of long-standing bugs in Calcite in the implementation of
casts and arithmetic. I plan to submit fixes for many of these. This PR
https://github.com/apache/calcite/pull/3522 is one on which more fixes will be
based. I would appreciate if anyone could review it.

not exactly my area of expertise but I will nonetheless take a look in the
next few days if nobody gets to it before me, as I agree that this is an
important issue and is needed to fix related pending issues (thanks for all
