Not that I know of, but I am not current on the POI or similar
projects.
I used the POI on a project several years ago for writing Excel
spreadsheets, and it worked well. Not sure about the POI for Word
though.

Thank you, now I managed it too. POI seemed to be very suitable for our
project, but there is no stable release yet, and the completion
has been delayed. Do you know another API except POI?

I was able to open a Word document in OOo and the subject,
author type meta data was correctly read by OOo, but the user defined
fields were not.
So it seems that MS standard meta data is readable from OOo but
not user defined fields.
