Can XCopyArea work on the desktop?

Hi, I want to copy one area of desktop to another place. However I find the XCopyArea function only work on windows(widgets), can't work on the desktop itself. The term desktop, I means the screen. Is it so? thank you very much for any information. It's an urgent work.
