I remember my mom telling me about the first electronic calculators they had
way back in the day. They'd just switched from mechanical adding machines to
electronic calculators. She said they were great - small, light, fast, but they

A friend of mine had voice-recognition software that locked his computer. To
unlock the machine he just talked into the mic. (think Sneakers "My voice is my

But if people in the office were being noisy, or the air-conditioner kicked on,
or someone was walking by, or he had a cold -
A friend of mine worked at Indiana University's computer store a few years ago

All of the new freshman girls w/ their BMWs and Escalades would walk w/ daddy

Anybody have a super-distilled version of the Cooper design process? I'm
thinking something like:
1. Research user goals.
2. Refine research results.
3. Develop personas.
4. Write high-level scenarios.
Etc. etc.
I guess one could make one based on the chapter/section titles from About
I've got a datagrid (oh the humanity!) with lots of columns and rows. In some
of the columns are cumulative numbers (e.g. 124 foos, 203 bars etc.) and in
some columns are averages (1.5 avg. foo per bar, 30 avg. bar per foo etc.)
Below the datagrid is a row matching columns to the grid above with
For a captivating experience, try Adobe Captivate. When I was in the eLearning
biz I fell in love w/ the absolute ease-of-use for both designers, writers and
developers. It only takes an hour or 2 to learn and then you can spend
countless hours tweaking the look and feel etc. ad nauseum.

The GUI was, IMHO, never intended to make things faster, just easier. The GUI
brought computers to the rest of us who couldn't be bothered to learn
command-line syntax and the mystical inner-workings of an 'invisible' machine.
Now, after years of use for some, some have become computer-savvy (wh
IMHO - None. No hard data needed.
I will never support that browser again, nor will I recommend it be supported.
It's very old, outdated, no longer downloadable, nobody supports it and it's
crazy-broken.
If this is elitist in any way so be it. You have to draw the line somewhere.

How many experts do you think would actually frequent the n00b forums to answer
their questions though? Maybe a couple of kind-hearted altruists, but really,
it'd end up like posting your question on the event horizon of a black hole.
Maybe it'll get picked up and answered, but more likely it'll
A simple way would be, for the first few posts, when they click on the 'new
thread' button, pop up a message that says something like "Why not try
searching for your topic first ..." with a link to the search portion, and then
another option - "I've already searched, just start a new thread" or

Where might one go to find out about when/where these events are occurring?

As a Flash dev, the actual motion of starting fast the slowing to a stop is
called 'ease out' (ease in would be starting slow then getting faster) ... So
when I'd describe the functionality I'd just say 'scrolling with easing' or
some such combination of words. "The will ease in,
then ease out
I've tried using Flex, but so far the decision-makers didn't like it because it
looked too polished and ready-to-go - they wanted B&W, uber-plain, literally
wireframed graphics.
So, I've been using Illustrator exclusively. It's a bit tedious, but very
flexible.
I hope to move to Thermo when it

Umm ... I've got xScope (love it) but I don't think it previews your work in
all browsers. Could you be thinking of a different util? If not - please show
me how this is done in xScope.

I'm stoked - but I haven't been able to download it yet. I get a little further

Still trying over other hour or so .
I'm about to start designing the UX and UI for the analytics portion of an RIA.

I think everyone could agree that automatic is technically 'easier', but you

I agree to the point that, well, 50 yr.s ago the year 2000 sounded like
super-sci-fi - we'd all be living on the moon, flying around in water-powered
cars living in transformable plastic houses (or something). Here we are , 2008,
not much further than we were then in many aspects. So, in 50 year
