Say you've got a list of the Top 5 Most Popular Whatevers. Is it
reasonable to fear that these top 5 will stay in the top 5, just
because they are positioned as the most popular?
If so, are there any best practices (or even anything you've used

Maybe they should've asked, "what should your job title be?"

I think you answered your own question: indicate that the link leads
to a PDF and let the user decide.
In my experience, the default behavior changes even when a different
browser is being used, and people get used to the way their browser
operates.

How about an example screenshot and something like "Get this for your

A clear example should go far enough explaining what it is and what

I admit I hadn't considered using paper quite so big. I also should
say that I really don't like arguing, but I feel I should clarify
some things:
Some people feel like prototyping with a computer discourages
changing your mind about a particular layout or interaction.
I don't feel that way. It's
Also, if you have the option of avoiding paper, I think it's the
environmentally responsible thing to do.
And if you're showing your sketch to someone who isn't in the
office with you, you'll probably use a scanner or fax machine, which
is more energy and paper wasted.
Bah. Paper.

Paper refuses to stretch for me, either horizontally or vertically, in
the way that Web browsers do. I suppose if there's a particular piece
of an interface that you're imagining, and want to show someone,
paper is okay. But not an entire page.
My practical answer is that I am much faster using a
