I found working with SimpleMachines (http://www.simplemachines.org/)
very easy compared to phpBB. It even has a web install / upgrade. I
will be testing bbPress (http://bbpress.org) soon which was created by
the same group who made WordPress.
Check out Vanilla, its pretty different from usual forum software, it has
more of a conversational feel, than a normal forum. Really liked it, but I
used it only for a very short period.

There is plenty to nitpick there but I like the way it works and
feels. Perhaps content and community trump usability. Posting is
kludgy for sure but reading, browsing and searching work very well.
The rich functionality is very
