I found working with SimpleMachines (http://www.simplemachines.org/) very easy compared to phpBB. It even has a web install / upgrade. I will be testing bbPress (http://bbpress.org) soon which was created by the same group who made WordPress.

My favorite forum is powered by vBulletin - forums.cgsociety.com. There is plenty to nitpick there but I like the way it works and feels. Perhaps content and community trump usability. Posting is kludgy for sure but reading, browsing and searching work very well. The rich functionality is very
