I haven't read all the post, but I remember having a similar problem. It turned out that on my IR remote one solder pad of the LED was broken. That bad contact caused the Squeezebox not accepting commands from the remote sometimes. I opened the remote, resoldered the LED, and I'm happy ever

Sorry, what I meant was non-powered speakers - the reasons being one less device (amp), one less thing to power, and volume being integrated through the Squeezebox. Basically (and its been talked about on this forum before) - an integrated amp in the thing. The weather-proof one would be great
