Can anybody tell me whether audio crossfading works specifically on a
Duet system and other hardware players. I'm pretty sure crossfade has
never worked for me, or at least I've never noticed it working but maybe
it's something in my system.

It is set up in Settings / Player / Audio
*Vortexbox LMS 7.9 music on QNAP TS419p via NFS* iThingys/iPeng/Tablets
*Living Room* - SB3 -> Onkyo TS606 - > Celestion Ditton F20s - Zone 2 ->
Sony TA FE 320 -> Sennheiser RS 130 & B&W P7
*Office* - RPi -> Sony TA FE320 -> Celestion F10s / SB3 -> Onky
I think by default it also doesn't cross-fade between tracks in the same
album.

That is correct. The default is that Smartfade is enabled. Tracks within
the same album are not subject to crossfade. It is all perfectly clear
in Settings /

AFAIK the players need to "merge" the two audiotracks to one. That needs
to be sorted before the next track ist on the way to the player.

In order to work you either need to run your own LMS server or log into
you MySqueezebox.com account. As far as I know, there is no LMS for
Android, so you can't play music stored in the box. At least not with
SqueezePlay.

Doesn't it do some analysis of the end/start of each track to see if
they are suitable for crossfading too? Or did I dream that...?
