Ok, that sounds easy enough ...
It also seems to work fine (much better than the hack using mplayer)

I would recommend either Squeezeplay or iTunes (or both). They work
quite well, but Squeezeplay has the additional benefit to be recognized
as a "real" (but software based) Squeezebox by your SBS. :)
Both may be controlled by their respective iOS remote control apps,
too.

A MacMini is a great choice for a SBS. I would recommend getting an
Intel MacMini though (as the SBS on my PB G4 has a tendency to crash at
the most inopportune times - whereas the SBS on my Intel Mac
Also, all Squeezebox products except the Radio and the Touch seem to be
discontinued (at least they no longer show up on the EU Logitech
Webpage).

Well that's why it is called iOS. :D Apple most probably used the same
procedure as usual (e.g. buy the brand from whoever owns it)
For administration (like favorites, settings (esp. alarms), etc) I tend
to use the web ui wherever possible as it is much more convenient than
using the player interface.

I would love
n I get home, I would like to have the ability to transfer
it to iPeng so that I may seamlessly (more or less) continue to listen
to that very same music on my home stereo. I am not sure how much work
that would be (or if it is a no-go for Apple), though. :)
Or hack the Apple TV and install 3rd party software that allows one to
use most codecs. :)

Have you tried Squeezeplay (which emulates a stand alone Squeezebox)? I
am mostly using it as a remote for my Squeezeboxes (much faster than
the web ui btw). It is also able to act as regular SB client and works
fine with MacOS X 10.6.5.

One of the problems is that a sales forum would (most likely) need a
