For about $100 you can get a remote extender device that keeps an IR
sensor outside the cabinet and sends IR signals directly to the
equipment inside via a wire. I have used one for several years with
great results. It also frees you to keep equipment in remote locations
(closet etc) to avoid th

Harmony won't help - the receiver and amp are in a normally closed
cabinet.

Have you considered X10 or something similar? Put the amp on an X10
switch, add an X10 sender to your SC server and run a plugin like
PowerCenter. Only obvious issue is lack of SN suport.

In any case, I had a new thought - maybe a photocell watching the light
on the front of the receiver - it goes dark when the receiver is powered
down.
Anyone tried that?

I know this is an old topic, but I want to raise it again. I would
happily pay for a device that would plug into the digital output of my
receiver (which I don't use) and control my amplifier power. I suspect
the device would be cheap to make, and the firmware could be changed to
