Found out from the forum, after translating the German, that the
Max2Play team - after many years - had finally fixed there own restore
function for LMS. Fixed since October; in the beta version available
through Max2Play, not on the download page, for anyone else that comes
across this.

My guess is that the problems you have encountered may be specific to
Max2Play, so you need to ask someone who knows something about Max2Play.

My permissions are also for user squeezeboxserver and group nogroup.

I've got my old prefs backed up but I can't overwrite, delete, or edit
any of the files. Both installs on RaspberryPi's. I've tried changing
permissions via GUI (WinSCP) and putty using chmod command, but same
result.

different machine as the client likely links this to a specific network

I am reinstalling LMS from scratch. I am installing all the plugins I
use from scratch too. I am also rescanning my whole music library from
scratch.
How to I keep my settings, for LMS, my players and my plugins?
I still have my old installation
