With either a Boom or Radio. If you don't have WiFi then the Boom is a
great choice. If you think you may go to WiFi in the future, then the
Radio with the battery pack would give you the most flexibility.

You know, I'm all for progress. It's change I object to.

Actually I would also add a (cheap) wlan-router. Connect it to your Mac
and you have a wireless music network for the Radio/Boom mentioned
above (sharing the Macbook's wifi should work, too).

I plan to bring my Macbook Pro (OS 10.6.3) with my 500GB+ music

I currently have a Duet with an additional receiver and I love them
both. I will be going to the beach for a couple of weeks and would
like to bring my music collection along. I plan to bring my Macbook

What price range are you going for with the self powered speakers?
I use AudioEngine A5's, MSRP is $349 (they are often sold under $300,
keep an eye out for sales from retailers).
These sound incredible for their size price. ;)

Logitech Z-2300 powered speakers have excellent 2.1 sound with plenty of
bass, and they only run about $120 or so. For a beach house vacation
they should be perfectly acceptable. I use them in my den at home, and
they sound great. At only about half volume they're very loud for the
room.
