Quite by accident I found a way to significantly reduce the time it
takes for iTunes to read a changed iTunes Library.itl file. If the
network drive with your music files is unmounted when you open iTunes,
the library is quickly updated (about 10 seconds for my 25MB library)

I thought I'd post my workflow for others to follow that may also have
this setup. Here's a summary:

1) I would consider just using an Apple TV. MP3 issues don't come up,
since you're within the iTunes universe. Disadvantage: not all music

done, what would you do? Ditch the Mac portion of everything and just
have everything done from Windows (SlimServer, iPod syncing, etc)?

I've got this working ... with a lot of caveats. Frankly, I probably
would not go through this again. But, if you're handy with fiddling and
have the time to burn, it can work.
