There's an option on the controller to turn the receiver off. Why would
you want to do this, what does it save?

Very little! There are a few reasons it's useful (switches off the
output lines which can help some amps auto-swtich) but in general it's
there on the SBR and all the other SB players because people complain
if there isn't an off switch ;-)
