1. patch system to latest ascii patch level. apt-get update && apt-get
upgrade
2. edit the /etc/apt/sources.list to change the ascii entries to
beowulf and I commented out the source package entries.

Not sure this is exactly what you are after but I have a cron job that runs:
dpkg --get-selections | grep -v "deinstall$" | grep -v "hold$" | grep
"install" | awk '{print $1;}'
and put the output in a file that I backup or grab, i.e.
~/selections-$(hostname).txt.

Whats funny is that this is something I brought with me from really old
Windows but
You fail to mention what was included in 'additional programs' but to
give you a hint I have a pretty much vanilla but up-to-date Ascii here
with just LXDE and root partition uses 7.1G.
May I suggest you traverse into / and look for usage?
