awstats is a 'simple' web server monitor showing you information about the
way visitors access your site - hmm also does some MTA's and ftp servers
now.
a more comprehensive monitoring solution would be nagios, munin, catci or
similar.

also check if your web servers are running cgi scripts as bash scripts
this is a bigger problem in general as it's prone to alsorts of abuse

We've used Socialcast and Salesforce's Chatter, both are externally hosts
(ie cloud) but both work quite well. Depends on how deep your pockets are
and if you're already using Salesforce or not.
