With vsz_limit it crashes much earlier, this log with 275GB produced by
ad known what would come of the request, I would not have made it :)
In the future, after an update, I will simply look in the file or log to see if
the option is activated again.

No, your program sends email via postfix listening on port 25 or 487.
dovecot doesn't send email, it receives it and then lets an MUA

Filters in Thunderbird require the user to select an existing folder. There is

With 2.3 you can use master_service_get_process_limit() for the process limit.
To get vsz_limit, it's probably easiest to use getrlimit().

But quite regulary I am seeing these mailboxes popup

Do you have
auth_username_format = %Ln or similar in your config? Can you send doveconf -n?
