Thanks Timo,
In the end, I figured things out.
Below are the changes to my initial configuration; now everything works
fine.
Just a note about a detail which took me some time to sort out: In
postfix master.cf, in LDA setup documentation, the suggested
configuration is:
dovecot unix - n n

deliver needs to be called by Postfix.

You can do it as explained in http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA#Virtual_users,
see especially the part with:
user = vmail
Having received no reply on this, and trying to find my way through, I
came to the hypothesis that the mentioned line should go where we do
userdb lookups:
So in /etc/dovecot-passdb-ldap.conf (which is identical to
/etc/dovecot-usrdb-ldap.conf), we should add:
hosts = localhost
tls = no
base
Also, as my virtual mail user:group is vmail:vmail, should I change
permissions in auth-master path (/var/run/dovecot)?
# ls -la /var/run/dovecot/
total 28
drwxr-xr-x 3 root dovecot 4096 Feb 22 23:32 .
drwxr-xr-x 23 root root4096 Feb 23 08:36 ..

Thank you Timo,
I understand now.
I am checking the documentation at: http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA which
states to define ( in socket listen { master { ):
path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master
Obviously auth-master is a socket and created on the fly (?)
For this to work properly, we must ha

Here is a session logged with mail_debug=yes; the mailbox has already
exceeded quota (I set it to 100K for testing). Note that I have only
changed IP addresses (actual ones are public) and main domain name:

I forgot to cc the list in my subsequent question in this thread, so
that question and Timo's reply has not been included in the mailing list.
I am submitting for thread completeness, thanking Timo for his

Auth binding is done ONLY for passdb lookup. After that it's unbound.
Userdb lookups can't do auth binding, because they don't know the
password. So userdb lookups bind to the "dn" setting to do the lookup.
You need to set "dn" setting.

Thank you Timo,
dovecot-ldap.conf works fine - obviously thanks to auth_bind_userdn, so
it authenticates as the binding user:
auth_bind_userdn = uid=%u,ou=people,dc=example,dc=com
I've tried to use a similar configuration (using auth_bind_userdn) in
the new configuration in dovecot-usrdb-

Hi,
I am trying to enable per user quotas, but I get the following error:

It seems as if ldapsearch for username/password won't work with my new

Hi people,
first message to this list.
I've a problem with dovecot 1.0.15 (debian latest package) and an LDAP query.
The situation is the following. My LDAP users have multiple mail addresses

I configured dovecot to authenticate through ldap. When for some reason the
ldap server is not working dovecot writes this message to the system log:
dovecot: auth(default): accept(type 1) failed: Too many open files
"Too many open files" is caused by an openldap bug. The serious problem is

It's OK when not build ldap as a plugin.
I checked passed.c and userdb.c and compared with 1.1.x, and modified
them:
change:
passdb_register_module(&passdb_ldap);
to:
#if defined(PASSDB_LDAP) && defined(BUILTIN_LDAP)
passdb_register_module(&passdb_ldap);
#endif
and OK.

And the same problem here, I can't get it compiled. (This is first time, I'm
