1. How much power should a good T4Xb put out into a dummy load in CW key down?
2. Has anyone ever cleaned a partly 'yellowed' round dial (the part
with the numbers on it)?
Thanks and 73's

Greetings,
I have a Drake TR-3 that the volume pot. has gone out at the lower volume
levels. Once the pointer reaches the 1200 position it works, but the volume is
so loud you cannot bear it.
I have tried contact cleaner, but that does not improve the situation. So I
don't think it's dirty, b

You have to look at the two red lights above the SIDEBAND switch. When
the "wrong" light is lit, you have to turn the SIDEBAND switch to
correct it. This is why the SIDEBAND switch doesn't SAY "USB" and "LSB".
If the audio is distorted on one sideband and not the other, the 9.000
MHz
I take that back, 20 meters also has to be put in the X position in order to
rx USB on 20 meters otherwise it goes to LSB when in
SSB mode.
I thought the radio was supposed to go to the proper sideband by itself?

Does anyone know is it normal for a Drake TR-3 to go into USB when switched to
40 meters.
All of the other sidebands are correct except for 40 meters and I have to put
the SIDEBAND SW into X in order to copy LSB on 40
meters, otherwise it goes to USB and is just garbled rx.
But putting it in X
If you want to build your own, I have a few 100 kc. crystals left here.

This is correct.
The next step is to ensure that all points marked XMIT CATH are at
ground with the relay depressed.

Oops, sorry. The TR-3 doesn't have K2. The function is handled by switch S2, the FUNCTION switch.
If you have a counter, the 9.0 MHz crystal Carrier Oscillator should shift up by approximately 1
kHz when you switch from SSB to X-CW. If you do not have a counter, listen on an external

Have you checked to ensure that relay K2 (left rear corner with chassis
upside down and facing you) is energizing when you switch to X-CW?
Also, the SIDEBAND switch must be in the -X position.

Best to check and make sure you have the bias voltage present. The finals
will self-destruct if the negative voltage is missing.

The meter movements DO affect each other, magnetically.

Also wanted to mention
I noticed that while the plate amperes meter does not change when I increase
the XMTR gain while trying to tune, the S units meter
does rise considerably, the 'PLATE AMPERES' meter actually decreases a tad not

Good morning everyone:
I stayed up last night and did the resistance checks.
Found one tube (V17 - 6AQ5) which when checking it you could warble the tube
and the measurements would change drastically.
So I had another and changed it and now it is much more stable.
Thought I had found the pro

That is backwards... The second terminal from the LEFT is RCVR K, and
the third terminal is XMIT K. Recheck. You said the receiver was
working, which means RCVR K was grounded with the relay de-energized.
These lines are called RCVR CATH and XMIT CATH in the TR-3. This is
