I do the same thing with my R4B. You'll find that even if you slow it down
significantly to allow it to run even quieter, the cooling effect is almost
the same. A 5" fan moves a lot of air.

Its too hot in Los Angeles so decided to try the fan I
made up for my T4XB on the receiver. It works like a charm.
The R4B tends to run hot anyway, I put the fan on top of the
cabinet, over the power transformer, blowing out. It keeps
the cabinet quite cool and even the transformer stays

VERY nice 'stacks'. ! :-) The good news is that you can 'mix and
match' to find the problem!
Pardon me if I go too far back, but I don't know your level of experience.
1. What signal level, if any, do you get from the CALIBRATOR? If you
do NOT find the calibrator signal, skip down
Thanks Garey,
I'm using a 2B to receive with so I'll have to get a replacement when I
can't stand it any longer.

You could try exchanging with the crystal in the R-4C, but likely to be
the same.
Replacement is the only 'real' answer.

The transmitter...T-4XC
The culprit...80 meter crystal.
The transmitted frequency on 80 is 10-11 kHz lower than it should be
compared to the crystals on the other bands. Are there trimmers that
adjust the crystal frequencies?
Thanks,

If the S-Meter is not registering, it's more likely that the problem is
further up. What position is the R-7 ANTENNA switch in? It's antenna
comes through the TR-7, so there could be a dirty contact, bad cable,
etc. in that area.

Eh?
a Drake R7 doesn't have a transmit signal.

on the S-Meter and it works fine. I clean some of the contact
Thank you to everyone that responded to my cap value question!! The support on
this site is second to none!!! I now have the parts needed & will do my
best to keep the smoke level to a minimum this evening!!

Pin 1 HIGH says that PTT is pressed.
Pin 2 and 7 LOW says that you've got a RX ONLY band selected.
Pin 6 HIGH says that you have audio triggering the VOX into TX mode.
Pins 3 and 5 SHOULD both be HIGH.
Tx EXCITER board pin 3/15 should be 0V.
Tx EXCITER board pin 3/16 should be +10V.

While you're in there, you might want to check D6 (on the same board,
tucked up under R91 [150ohm, 2W]) to make sure it's not shorted.
Replace (if necessary) with 1N4007 or similar.

Kirk,
It is listed on K4OAH's service CD as an 8 uF, 150V. The replacment in the
capacitor kit from Hayseed Hamfest is 10 uF 200V.
This is the same capacitor that blew in my R-4B that prompted me to purchase
the kit.
