Forgot, both Preselector and RF TUNE should be at about 6.5 on their respective
logging scales.
With two different color crystals you'll find that the adjustment drifts apart with temperature
changes, but shouldn't be more than 10-20 Hz over time. If the room temp changes considerably

It sounds like you are using the correct procedure. Both BAND switches set to 3.5, T-4X on SSB,
receiver set for 4.8 kHz and PASSBAND set to center of longest line. Switch to SPOT, and select
strongest USB or LSB. Peak the Preselector and RF TUNE for max. You should hear the 'tweet'
I was calling and calling and calling...
As soon as light dawned on Marblehead, I realized that the transceive alignment
between my recently-acquired T-4XB and R-4B #1 (The Problem Child) was off.
I assumed (wrongly) that you aligned like with the T-4X - that didn't really
work out.

Mine came butchered. I didn't care, it was so scratched that I just pained it
black to closer match the Drakes I use it with. I had to figure out what had
been done with it. I never run 160, but never took the mods off either.

OK, so much for my 'expertise'! :-) Looks like this may be one of the 5%.
Someone emailed me direct saying that they had sent the old crystal in to ICM and they were able to
provide a correct replacement. I'm not sure how that works, perhaps they 'knew' what it should be,

I've not seen an answer to your question. I don't "KNOW" the answer, but the crystal in that
oscillator is operating in the parallel resonant mode, (not typical for solid state circuits,) and
about 95% of parallel resonant crystals are specified for a 32 pF load. I have seen a few spec'

I had questions re: the Sherwood mods. When I emailed Rob Sherwood (email

would include a description of the differences on your PD4. Mike

Yeah, I've seen various mods for adding 160, but they're compromises and - as mentioned here - they butcher the tuner. Those mods are best left for a real dog that you might find - one that has half the paint already flaked off or was previously re-painted/butchered by a PO. ;-)

Considering how easy it is to build a tuner for 160, even a double balanced one
for open wire feedline, not sure who would want to butcher a classic tuner and
lower the value by 50%. Then again, that happens frequently when you see all
the pilot lights, switches, repaints, etc. of vintage gear
There is a rather straight forward mod for the Johnsons to allow them to cover
160. Somewhere I have the article. Does require some work and potentially a
12volt supply if you use relays vs switches. Unfortunately, it mods/butchers a
classic tuner unit, but if you can stand doing that.

Bud,
I received just one copy of your email. And the same with recent messages
from others.
