Just in case this is of any interest for you, I've been testing the savage dri
drivers from S3 with XFree 4.2. It compiled with very few tweaks for kernel
2.4.21 and gcc 3.3.
I tested it with on a S3 Twister card from my Compal (!) laptop.

xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/shared/drm
2D support (just chip IDs) was recently added to xfree86 CVS. You can
download that and test it or grab a pre-compiled binary here:

For 3D support you have to use Ati's binary driver.
