I tried the latest X11R7 snapshots with Mesa-6.4 and Linux 2.6.14 (with the
PCI ID added to the drm_pciids file) on a x86-64 (64bit user-space) AMD
Turion laptop - without success.
The DRM is initalized and X attempts to utilize it, but the machine freezes
with a black screen at X

The current CVS has changed the whole way this is called.. I'll be putting
that patch into git for 2.6.15 soon..
I had to update this patch due to whitespace changes (some of which are
quite questionable) in Linus' git tree today. Not sure is these are the
changes you were referring
As a side note, I wonder it it wouldn't be worth defining a dedicated
macro for this one DRM_INFO() call, as you seem to be willing to have
