Thank you George for guiding me to the right direction, it's been a while
when the -tag was needed :D This gave some help, in our case the
citation is fully created in the import phase of the submission so we have
to do some modifications still. But your reply has helped us getting
forward

I just used the old "force" method and simply put in the italics tag. See

I'm currently trying to figure out the same situation you have solved,
